Myths & Facts

Connections With WiFi:

Myth – I can connect anything and everything to the DR5000 via WiFi at the same time.

Fact – You can connect multiple devices but you can only run 1 protocol at a time. Ex. LocoNet, ExpressNet, DrCommand, Etc….

More Info – If you want to use Engine Driver you will need to have either JMRI or a digitrax LNWI.

If you want to use the Roco WiFi throttles or the Z21 App, you will need to have the WiFi in the DR5000 PC App set to the Z21 protocol.

Best Results – Use a USB cable to the DR5000 for the PC App and set the WiFi to Z21. This gives you wireless access to WiFi throttles & the Z21 app. If you need more range, a simple WiFi extender plugged into the LAN port will work. Point your WiFi devices to the extender and use the same password.

Next add a Digitrax LNWI for Engine Driver. This can also be used on the ESU Mobile Controll II throttle.

Another option is adding a Digitrax UR93, UR92 or UR90 for wireless walk around Digitrax throttles.

JMRI With WiFi:

Myth – I can run JMRI and the DR5000 PC App wirelessly to my PC at the same time.

Fact – You can run the DR5000 PC App wirelessly and you can run JMRI wirelessly but not at the same time.

More Info – Since JMRI does not have the DrCommand as an available connection, you cannot connect both JMRI & the DR5000 PC App wirelessly to the DR5000 at the same time. JMRI can connect wirelessly to the DR5000 using either Loconet Over TCP or Roco Z21. The DR5000 PC App can connect wirelessly but only using the DrCommand protocol.

Best Results – Wired connections are always the best choice for guaranteed data delivery. We recommend using the following settings in the preference tab.

System Manufacture: Digitrax

System Connection: LocoNet LocoBuffer-USB

Serial Port: You get this from the USB tab in the DR5000 PC App

Command Station Type: DCS100 (Chief)
